Watches FOUND after a long search

Nov 10, 2014,08:48 AM

We have had some discussion on this forum about searching for rare and desireable Seikos.

I think it would be appropriate to give encouragement to the seekers.
Could those of us who HAVE FOUND the watches we were looking for share a bit about the process?

I'll start.

About 10 years ago I saw a mesmerizing photo of a Grand Seiko SBGW003 by SteveG, and immediately fell in love.

[NOTE: Stay away from his photos if you don't want to spend a lot of money and time searching. Over the years, I have had an orange Seiko diver, a Seiko Flightmaster, a Credor Spring Drive, a Seiko Kinetic Chronograph, a BlancpaiN 7002, a Halter Classic, etc etc PLUS this watch, all which he had posted on his site]

I started a hunt for one of the 300 beauties, but of course I was late to the game and they all had been sold long before I got on the trail.
So I searched through eBay, through Seiko fora of all sorts, and even one day wandered onto a photography forum.

There I "overheard" a photographer in Singapore who was musing about selling his GS to buy a new camera body or lens. I chased him down by sending a flurry of emails, and we struck a deal. But it was a long ways away, and I wanted some reassurance that this was a decent piece for the price. So I asked a forum moderator in Singapore to meet with the guy to take a few photos. It turned out that several PuristS were involved in the assessment. They sent photos which showed some discoloration on the dial.

I was torn. Here was a watch. For sale. Within reach. But flawed.

And this watch's beauty is heavily based on the dial and its appearance. I just couldn't go through with the deal as it was.

So I asked the seller if he would send the watch to Grand Seiko in Japan, to have it serviced. If it came back perfect, I'd pay his price for the watch and the servicing cost. If not, then he could sell it elsewhere but at least the watch would be ready to go. This was agreed between us and the watch went off to the spa for about 6 weeks.

Finally I got new photos of the watch completely serviced, with new dial (amazing that they had one) and looking like a brand-new item. All that remained was to send the money, wait for EMS and take delivery (plus take care of the guys who evaluated it for me ... and were itching to pounce on it if I said no).

Here's my first photo of it:

and the movement!

After starting the process sometime late in 2006, I finally located this watch in March of 2008. It arrived in June, 2008. The photos are dated June 9th.

Here are my most recent pictures of it being inspected by the master at Shizukishi Watch Studio last month (where it was originally built in April 2001).

and sailing off the coast of Japan.

Don't give up!

I have a couple other successes which I will assemble as separate posts.

All you Successful Seiko PuristS - please add your story of searching and finding the watch of your dreams ...

"The thrill of the hunt"... we all know it. And to come across samples that are so close but not just right. Makes it so rewarding when you find what you are chasing. I would say this one was more than worth the emotional (and financial) investments!

That's right! Don't give up!

Here's another story in the Watches FOUND after a long search (Don't give up!) saga. I heard about a special Seiko Chronograph that was issued at the 40th anniversary (2004) of Seiko's first Chrono. As it turned out, it was a Kinetic Sportura variant, usi...

Though i didn't spend years searching for this watch (luckly!), I have spent almost every day chasing it after seeing it in Cazalea's small seiko thread. I don't know why i love it so much but I think the design, the shape and size are just so perfect or ...

This story of a FOUND watch took me awhile to discover - my failing memory was jogged by the appearance of some watch photos in an old email. Here's what I found - photos of a manual wind Credor Spring Drive from 1999's edition of 200 or so. These were se...

Earlier on in my watch collecting hobby, I gradually gotten to know about the existence of the 4S family of movements, mainly due to Don's excellent review of 1 particular 4s watch. His excellent review can still be seen here . The watch in question is th...

No, you didn't miss it - the finale was a bit anti-climactic. I started something I anticipated would be a bit more exciting at the finish, but it turned out that the fun was in the process of the competition. You convinced me I needed to go back and expl...

Great thread topic. My most recent adventure was tracking down two all original, mint Seiko World Time watches from 1964. One was for me, the other for my dad. My goal was to give it to him for his 65th bday - I live in Tokyo and he lives in NYC, and the ...
