Australia’s first ‘ticketed’ restaurant: Prix Fixe, Melbourne

 By: AndrewD : April 28th, 2014-05:42
For years restaurateurs have rightly complained about patrons not turning up for a booked table; it is equivalent to burning money as they have to plan ahead with staffing and purchase ingredients. The response to this have been varied including restauran...

Vegas does something similar with many of their restaurants especially if it's on a Friday or Saturday reservation (exception are made of course for guests on their rewards program). Operating a restaurant is one of the highest failures in small business ...

The fixed price menu ...

 By: AndrewD : April 28th, 2014-13:51
... itself is not a new idea (the term fixe prix goes back at least to the 1880s in France) but the package here with Internet ticket sales for a fixed number of seats (2, 4, 6 or 8 people, although you can phone and make arrangements for odd numbers if t...

Tickets make sense!

 By: patrick_y : April 28th, 2014-14:31
That totally makes sense! Wished some of the restaurants in San Francisco would do this... I'm having a really hard time getting into some restaurants here in San Francisco. Probably the only good thing about dining alone as it increases my chances of get...

SF foodie adventures

 By: AndrewD : April 28th, 2014-15:40
It has been 17 years since I was in SF. But we had a great time and I do recall the live Asian food markets, seafood - crab - and the chowder in the hollowed out bread rolls. It was a lovely city to spend a few days in. It would be great to return. Andrew...

Restaurants must have a big issue with bookings just not turning up so good for them to do this. May I comment on the 'Pear Cider' which does annoy me as cider is made from apples and perry is made from pears. I remember a few years ago at a local beer an...

now I have to look for it...

 By: DRMW : April 29th, 2014-10:36
Apple cider is popular here (there's a great place outside of San Diego that has a apple festival!) but I haven't seen pear perry. Now I'm going to have to try and find some perry! Thanks for the suggestion Andy. -MW

Harder to find...

 By: Andy : April 29th, 2014-11:03
Actually Babycham is a perry and is also blamed for the demise of perry in the 70's and 80's..!! This is the choice at a local village festival last year of the real cider and perry....15 is a nice number and I think I tried them all..!! I find these are ...

Found some! There is a company called Wyder out of the east coast in Vermont that is available at the supermarket. They state that they have been around for 20+ years so I'll have to try it out. Now I need to get some 'moonshine' like the one you posted L...

Excellent...:-)

Actually the Moonshine was lethal as it tasted just like apple juice but was 7.5%...!!! I hope to find it again this year :) Andy.

Pear 'cider' and Perry

 By: AndrewD : April 29th, 2014-15:45
Thanks for the detailing, Andy. Very interesting history, both ancient and recent. It looks like the description 'Pear Cider' emerged 20 years ago and has led to a resurgence of interest in the traditional Perry drink, perhaps because the idea of an alcoh...

Could also be a marketing idea....

 By: Andy : April 30th, 2014-09:30
I know some big makes like Magners also don't use the word perry but do use pear on the label. Then like you say people will immediately know what it is which is a good thing as it spreads the word about. Just don't call it a pear cider at a festival...LO...

Hard work changing menus completely every month, so let's see how they go, but the staff were very enthusiastic and there was a very positive buzz. Let us know your reactions if you visit the restaurant. Regards Andrew
